Breathe Easy with Respirators from 3M!

Posted by Administrator on 5/11/2015 to 3M
Respirators come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and models for multiple industries and range from military use to personal health grade. They can be disposable, reusable, or even powered and coupled with a face shield. Deciding what respirator best fits your business can be a daunting task, but our friends at 3M have an immense inventory to satisfy your safety specifications. And OBBCO can quickly and easily supply your business with their high quality wares.

Just as there are many types of pollutants and contaminates in the air, there are multiple layers of defense against them. The most common type of respirator is the “air purifying respirator” such as the 3M R6211 spray painting respirator kit that is used to mitigate the effects airborne particulates while spray painting. Typically one or two cartridges attach securely to a mask which has built into it a corresponding number of valves for inhalation and one for exhalation. These units also come in powered variants coupled with heavy-duty filters for more polluted areas.

A set of chemical cartridge respirators are designed for areas where volatile organic compounds (VOC’s), dangerous gasses, or health-concerning vapors exist. A good example is the 3M ammonia & methylamine respirator cartridge which is designed to help protect against ammonia and methylamine vapor exposure. Cartridges are filled with sorption media such as activated charcoal. These cartridge media interact chemically with the surrounding atmosphere to absorb harmful substances. The life of these cartridges vary based on the breathing rate of the operator, the concentration of vapor in the atmosphere, the humidity of the environment, and the carbon weight of the media, as well as other factors. When the cartridge has reached capacity, airflow becomes restricted and the cartridge must be immediately changed.

Self- Contained Breathing Apparatuses (SCBA’s) function in the same way as SCUBA gear by supplying breathable air from a pressurized tank through a pressure-regulator to a mouthpiece. Air cylinders come in virtually any shape, size, and material; the size of tank you purchase will determine the length of time the tank be used before the air supply is depleted. This type of respirator is used in extremely toxic environments and has become a favorite of the firefighting industry.

Deciding what type of respirator you need should help in determining the durability requirements of your industry. If you are using respirators for a single job, or very few jobs, cost effective disposable respirators may work well for your needs. But if you are in a chemically hazardous environment every day, a reusable mask with cartridge filters may be more appropriate. If the job involves risk with large airborne debris as well as particulates, heavy-duty models with face-shields could be warranted.

Whatever demands your industry requires, you can breathe easy with 3M products, and OBBCO can supply you with premiere safety equipment from top manufacturers at wholesale prices.
